The Emergency Kit:
The Family Emergency Kit needs to include enough supplies for your family to stay at home for at
least three days. Here are the basics to include in a Family Emergency Kit:
- three gallons of water per person per day
- three day supply of food (The water and food should
be replaced every six months for freshness.)
- basic kitchen accessories are needed for cooking,
eating and storage
- any special needs for infants or seniors
- battery powered radio or television and extra fresh
batteries are needed for current emergency information

- several flashlights
- blankets or sleeping bags for each person
- matches in a waterproof container
- paper, pencils
- fire extinguishers
- a whistle
- a map of the area
- an extra set of keys
- identification cards for everyone in the household
- copies of any credit cards
- copies of medical records, and medical
prescriptions
- copies of passports and photos of anyone who would
be confined to the home
- medicines should be stored in a first aid kit
- any of the paper items that can be damaged by
moisture should be sealed in plastic protection
- personal hygiene items
- one complete change of clothing and footwear for
each person
- books, games, and toys for children for
entertainment
- sturdy, easy to carry, non-paper containers should
be used to store the emergency kit.
If possible have everyone in the family, including
children work on putting together your emergency kit, and ask for input from
everyone on what to include. Every family member needs to know where the
emergency kit is stored.
In case of an
emergency event, always listen to your local radio or television station for
advice on appropriate actions for you and your family.
